A Conversation on Daylight Education and Research, between Dr Mandana S. Khanie and Professor Koen Steemers

BIOGRAPHY

Professor Koen Steemers

Koen's current research addresses the architectural and urban implications of environmental issues ranging from sustainability and energy use to human behaviour and well-being. He was Head of Department (2009-14) and Head of Research as Director of the Martin Centre (2003-08). He is an architect and environmental design specialist and was listed as one of the "top 50 most influential people in UK sustainability" by Building Design.

Koen was awarded an honorary Doctor of Laws "in recognition of his distinguished career and his international standing as one of the world's experts on sustainable building design". Koen Steemers was member of The Daylight Award Jury in 2016, 2018 and in 2020, and chaired the jury in 2022.

Dr Mandana S. Khaine

Mandana Sarey Khanie is a lecturer in Daylighting and Lighting. She is specialized in daylighting and visual comfort through her PhD studies in Civil and Environmental Engineering at Ecole Polytechnique Fédérale du Lausanne (EPFL), at the Laboratory of Performance-Integrated Design (LIPID). Mandana has Postdoctoral experiences at EPDL and DTU. Her research and teaching focus on indoor environment quality and the use of lighting and daylighting. In recent years she has been working on projects including façade strategies for prevented overheating and maximum daylight use, daylighting potentials in residential buildings, integrated lighting and daylighting control system strategies, a novel gaze-driven photometry for observing natural gaze behavior in relation to conditions constrained by real world luminous environment, and development of a preliminary mathematical model (GRL) for gaze response predictions in relation to light. Mandana has teaching and supervision experiences and has published several papers in international conferences and journals. She owns a Master of Science in Design for Sustainable Development and a Master of Science in Architectural Engineering. Mandana has been part of The Daylight Award Community from the launch in 2022 and, participating in the workshop held at the Window Museum at the beginning of 2023.
